Learn Custom Car Construction at WyoTech

Custom CarGene Winfield. George Barris. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. Xzibit. In the world of custom car construction, these names are legendary. In the hands of these masters, ordinary production automobiles became unique works of mobile art.

Of course, it takes more than just artistic vision to be a custom car builder. It takes metal working skills, a strong understanding of automotive engineering and a broad knowledge of materials ranging from metal and fiberglass to fabric and paint.

There, WyoTech offers a Street Rod and Custom Fabrication specialty as part of its Automotive Technology program. The specialty provides hands-on training in key car customization skills, including:

  • Custom and specialized sheet metal shaping and fabrication
  • Application of lead (body solder)
  • M.I.G., T.I.G. and Oxy-Acetylene welding
  • Chop tops including Carson-style tops
  • Hidden pin hinges (suicide doors)
  • Body construction including firewalls, floorboards and transmission tunnels
  • Custom paint techniques including special effects, airbrushing and pin striping

You'll learn to use a range of power tools, including grinders, sanders, power hammers, bead rollers and the louver press.
This is in addition to the core studies in WyoTech's Automotive Technology program, which cover basic engine management systems, drivability diagnostics, drive train systems and chassis.

If you'd like additional training to help further your career in car customizing, WyoTech's Sacramento campus also offers specialty programs in Motorsports Chassis Fabrication, and Trim and Upholstery Technology.

All courses are taught by experienced industry professionals in modern workshops that offer hands-on training in your specialty.
