Denver TV News Team Covers WyoTech Volunteer Truck Restoration

In this season of giving, Denver television station KUSA’s 9News recently aired a heartwarming feature on how an Afghanistan War widow had her classic 1959 Chevy Apache pickup truck restored with the help of students from WyoTech’s Laramie campus. Bruce Hays, a captain in the Wyoming Air National Guard, had purchased the truck as an anniversary gift for his wife, Terry, knowing her father had driven one when she was a child. Terry still had a strong emotional attachment to that particular model. Although it was the couple’s intention to rebuild the truck together, Bruce’s deployment to Afghanistan put that plan on hold. His subsequent death from a roadside IED put those plans in free-fall.
Terry first hired a local mechanic to do the restoration, but he simply ran off with the $17,000 she had paid him. (He was subsequently apprehended and booked on multiple charges.) When friends learned to Terry’s situation, they enlisted the help of several local businesses, including WyoTech, to help fulfill the late captain’s dream.
