Automotive-Diesel Combo Helps Students Acquire Additional Skills
Posted Thursday, Aug 11, 2011 by
Modern automotive technicians are likely to encounter a wide variety of power plants in their work. A 21st century automotive technician is likely to have to address problems with diesel engines, gasoline-electric hybrids and, with increasing frequency, all-electric motors. And all of them are dependent on advanced electronics.
To prepare tomorrow’s automotive technicians for the challenges ahead, WyoTech’s Laramie, Wyo., campus offers an Automotive-Diesel combination elective as part of its Automotive Technology and Diesel Technology career education programs. Students studying either Automotive Technology or Diesel Technology can take two “crossover” courses to expand their knowledge and get valuable hands-on experience with different types of power plants. This higher level of expertise can make a WyoTech graduate very valuable to many employers.
The Combination Program
WyoTech’s Automotive-Diesel combination allows students in the automotive core to take two additional eight-week courses in diesel. They can choose from among the following:
- Power Trains
- Fluid Power and Electrical
- Engine Management Systems and Refrigeration
Conversely, students in the Diesel core program may select two classes from the following automotive courses:
- Basic Engine Management Systems
- Drivability Diagnostics
- Drivetrain Systems
Upon graduation, students from both programs can take advantage of WyoTech’s Career Services department. Career Services helps students transition from school to the workplace by offering support with everything from resume preparation to identifying and contacting employers.
