WyoTech in Laramie Receives National Recognition for 4th Consecutive Year

For the fourth consecutive year, WyoTech in Laramie has been named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

Higher education institutions that provide exemplary community service and achieve significant outcomes are chosen to receive the award. Recognition comes from the highest levels of the federal government and is a result of a strong commitment to volunteer services, service learning and civic involvement in the community and on campus.

Students from the WyoTech campus actively volunteered for some form of community activity service in 2010. More than 1,000 students from the Laramie campus were aided by WyoTech faculty members on various projects. A notable project included assistance during an unexpected flood in July, which placed dozens of homes at risk in the West Laramie area.

Students and faculty members rolled up their sleeves to shovel, fill and distribute truckloads of sand that was used to barricade homes. Additional service projects included numerous hours volunteered at Ghost Tours, a historic haunted house, and Jubilee Days, the yearly weeklong community festival.

The involvement of WyoTech students in Laramie community events is commendable, considering the intense classroom training and shop time required for each student to complete their program. The director of student services at WyoTech in Laramie voiced his amazement at the willingness of students from each successive class year to volunteer their time in community service activities.

Many students who graduated from WyoTech in Laramie have entered the world with a newfound commitment to public service and an inner knowledge  they can make a difference in the lives of others.

The Honor Roll is administered by the CNCS in collaboration with the U.S. Departments of Education, and Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.
