In case you didn't know, diesel engines are far more powerful than gasoline engines. You'll find them in vehicles that need hard working combustion power to get the job done, such as bulldozers, tractors, trucks and buses.
The hard-working guys and gals that form diesel crews keep these powerful and heavy vehicles in top working condition. Sure, the work is messy and they can expect their share of scraped knuckles and long hours on occasion, but the average diesel mechanic enjoys solving the big mechanical problems that diesel technology often imposes.
A diesel mechanic has to be flexible. One day he or she will work on an electrical system, and the next day they'll become a sleuth in overhauls, piecing together all the clues to find out what's wrong with a vehicle. The job of the diesel mechanic is becoming increasingly complex due to the increase in the use of electronic components used to control a diesel engine's operation.
New government standards on emissions have placed requirements on the diesel technology industry to comply with new pollution regulations. This means engines will need to be retrofitted with new compliant emission filters and catalysts.
Diesel mechanics are employed in almost every industry that uses trucks, buses, hauling and delivery equipment, and people and goods. You can also find qualified diesel technicians working in the fields of automotive repair, manufacturing and retail.
Additional career opportunities include working as a heavy equipment maintenance operator, locomotive maintenance, fleet maintenance mechanic, and dealership service and aftermarket parts development/specialist.
