Check out the WyoTech Marine Technology Program!
The truth is, there's always a need for qualified marine mechanics to fix watercraft people use for fishing, pleasure boating, water sports, and racing. There are a lot of people that even choose to live on their boat.
It's the job of the marine mechanic to keep marine watercraft of every kind running safely and smoothly.
Marine technology, just like any other technical field, is becoming more complex. This presents a direct challenge to the men and women who work in the field of marine technology. In short, a marine mechanic will have to be familiar with all the varieties and techniques used to locate the source of a problem, and to make the needed repairs.
Marine motorboats and engines need scheduled maintenance to keep them running and in top shape. For the marine mechanic, routine maintenance consists of inspecting such engine functions as: electrical systems, fuel injection systems, spark plugs, and other engine parts.
After the inspection is done, the marine mechanic's job is to fix what's broken.
Smaller marine vessels usually have portable engines which are removed and brought to a shop for repairs. Larger sea-going vessels, such as cabin cruisers, yachts, and commercial fishing boats to name a few, are powered by the mighty diesel engine which can also be removed for repair, or serviced on the spot.
You don't hear a lot about marine mechanics, but you can rest assured they're on the job every day doing what's needed to keep the nation's watercraft up and running.
