10-Tips to Help You Save Money at the Gas Pump

auto-pix.JPGEveryone knows the cost of gas has skyrocketed, and this means more out-of-pocket money. There are a few things we can all do to make our hard-earned dollars go a lot further. And, it'll also have the effect of helping to clean up the environment.

You'd be surprised how much money you can save by following a few simple tips!

1. Fill your tank early in the morning. The fuel will be more dense than if you filled up when the gas is warmer.

2. Pump your gas in slow mode. Using the higher modes will only increase gas vapors, and decrease the amount of gas that actually makes it into your tank.

3. Don't allow your tank to drop below the half-way mark before you refill it. Otherwise, you'll have air in the tank.

4. If you see a gasoline truck loading storage tanks, wait and come back later. The sludge at the bottom of the tanks will be stirred up, and will find its way into your tank; affecting your gas mileage.

5. Don't drive faster than the posted speeds. Your gas mileage will decrease at speeds over 60 miles per hour. Plan your trips by leaving earlier.

6. Don't allow your car to idle if it’s not necessary. Cut the engine off and save gas.

7. Avoid sudden starts and stops. Those quick starts and stops can burn up to 5% of your gas.

8. Loaded racks and carriers create wind resistance, which can consume 2% of your gas.

9. Properly inflate and align your tires. This can help you improve gas mileage by up to 3%.

10. Get scheduled tune ups, and change your air filter when needed.
