BRAKES (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe)

In January 2008, fuel drag racer Doug Herbert, lost his two sons, Jon, 17, and James, 12, to a tragic automobile accident. One can only imagine the pain and grief that the Herbert family has had to endure as a result.

Doug Herbert has made it his personal mission to prevent other parents and families from having to experience the same tragedy in their own lives, and BRAKES is the perfect vehicle through which to accomplish this vision.

*Unfortunately, the leading cause of death for teenagers are motor vehicle crashes, and that stats are troubling: Nearly half of 16 and 17-year-old drivers who were involved in a fatal crash, were carrying at least one passenger under the age of 21-with no adult passenger on board.

Here are some safety tips that every teen that drives can benefit from:

1. After your teen gets his or her learner's permit or license, make it a point to drive with them whenever possible. As a parent, you’re in a position to help your child learn the proper driving skills. If you don't have the temperament or time, find someone that does.

2. Drive with your teen through a variety of road and weather conditions, and these should include snow, rain, ice, or fog whenever possible. The more practice they have, the safer they'll be able to navigate the highways and freeways.

3. Discuss thoroughly the consequences of what can happen if driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol with your teens. Many teens have the attitude that nothing bad can happen-however, this often changes when teens have the knowledge, the opportunity, and the time to think things through.

Remember, it's impossible to turn the clock back once a tragedy has happened. A careless moment can redefine an entire lifetime. Drive Safe!
