Driving Safely with Children in the Car

Driving Safely with Children in the Car

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of death and serious injury for children. And, it's a fact that 80% of all fatalities could have been prevented if the children were secured in seat belts. For those who feel children might be safe in their arms, even on the passenger's side, think again! The impact of an accident can actually rip a child away, and sending it flying through the windshield.

While states require a child to be secured by a seat belt, you should make it a habit to strap your child in even if only driving a short distance, or you're unsure whether laws apply. No matter what the legal and allowable motor vehicle safety standards might be in your state, the child's safety seat you use should exceed them.

The center of the back seat is actually the safest location for your child's safety seat. That's because the center of the car offers the most protection from all sides in the event of an accident. You can also help to minimize potential injury by not letting your child play with any sharp objects. Soft toys are recommended.

You should also check to make sure your car doors are locked safely. And, preventing your children from playing with door locks, buttons, and knobs and handles is also a good sign of a caring parent.

Finally, it's a good idea for you to buckle up too every time you get into your vehicle. You'll be setting a good example for the passengers riding in your car.
