Got the Itch to Buy a Used Car?

With gas prices going through the roof and the economy tightening up these days, it's no small wonder people are looking for used-cars specials. With a used car, you might be able to save on big expenditures. However, if you're not careful, you might end up paying more than you bargained for if you wind up with a lemon.

Here's a few questions to ask yourself!

1. How do you plan on using the car?

You have a lifestyle, no matter how much or how little money you might have at the moment. It's important to figure out what your lifestyle is all about. It's probably safe to assume at this stage you won't be stepping out the car sporting a tuxedo, so the looks of the car shouldn't be the top priority. If it appears to be a reliable car, consider making the purchase.

2. Who will be driving the car?

If you're a soccer mom or dad, and you've got the job of getting the kids to practice, you may want to look for a "clunker" with lots of seating and storage capacity. If you're planning to use the car for short commutes, gas mileage and a degree of comfort will probably be your biggest concern.

3. Are you “up” on car features?

There are a few things that a car should have, like air conditioning, adjustable seats, windows that roll completely up, or adjustable controls. Take the time to make a list before you go out looking for the used-care of your dreams.

4. How much can you afford to spend?

Think in terms of how much money you can allow yourself to spend on a down payment, monthly payments, insurance, registration, and gas. Don't forget to factor in those car repairs that always seem to creep up on a car nearing its tenth birthday.

5. Do your homework

Make it a point to gather as much information as you can. Check out the different makes and models that fit within your budget. Check out the retail value, performance, past repairs, and any other things that will help you to make a better-informed decision.

Congratulations on buying that new-used car!
