We all have an idea of what off-road driving is all about, but rock crawling takes it to another level. The vehicles used can be anywhere from stock to highly modified versions. And, you can get the job done in four-wheel-drive Jeep, truck, or "buggie".
You get to choose the "warriors chariot", and the one thing you can count on is the rugged obstacles you'll have navigate on the course. The course includes mountains, boulders, foothills, rock piles, and mountain trails to name a few.
Rock crawling appeals to the "slow" speed group, who want to approach the adventure utilizing careful and precise driving techniques. The thrill is watching rock crawlers' drive up, down, and across obstacles that defy "reason".
The sport is getting big, and competition can range from the local level to nationals. The courses are usually 100-200 yards long, and it's some pretty mind-boggling navigating that goes on during the competition.
The Chariots!
The great thing is the rock crawlers employ some awesome custom parts such as: locking differentials, off road tires, new and improved suspensions that include lift-kits, four-wheel steering, roll cage, bead locks, body armour, and more!
1. GreenLaning
Some recreational and challenging light duty off-road adventures include "Greenlaning", which requires an unpaved track such as forest tracks or unpaved roads that are in dis-use.
2. Mudding
"Mudding" is an attempt to drive your vehicle through deep mud as far as possible without getting stuck. If you're thinking about taking a crack at it, make sure you have a plan for getting your vehicle out of the mud if it gets stuck.
3. Rock Racing
Very similar to rock crawling, except the rules are different as there are no penalties for hitting cones, backing up, or winching.
4. Formula off Road
This is the high powered, high octane version of off-road competition. The vehicles are usually modified. This is where you find the suspension components that allow rough handling and high torque for low speeds.
The sport is growing by leaps and bounds, and you can bet that there will be a need for people that can modify and build the chassis and vehicles that typify the sport. Why not contact Wyotech today for a DVD.
