A smoking car limping down the street with white smoke bellowing from the tailpipe is not a pretty site. It means that someone could be reaching in their pockets very soon to fork out some money for engine maintenance.
Three Types of Smoke that Can Qualify Your Car as a Smoke Wagon:
1. White Smoke
White smoke is usually the result of antifreeze or water entering the cylinder where gas and air are compressed and ignited. The white smoke is actually steam. Check to see if the anti freeze has contaminated the engine oil. Contaminated oil looks like a chocolate shake. Also, remove and replace any failed worn gaskets.
2. Black Smoke
Black smoke is causes by excessive fuel in the cylinder that cannot be completely burned. It will usually be accompanied by a fuel odor, and reduction in fuel economy. Your carburetor could be out of adjustment along with a faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel injector.
3. Blue Smoke
Blue smoke is the result of engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned in the fuel air mixture. All it takes is a small drop of engine oil to produce this result. You'll usually find the blue smoke in older model cars with a lot of mileage.
