Three Simple Ways to Stop a Pesky Oil Leak

Oil leaks are no fun to deal with, and unless you've had adequate training on vehicle upkeep, finding and repairing oil leaks can be a challenge. Contrary to popular belief, cars don't really use up engine oil. Surprised?! If your car is running low on oil consistently, the problem can be traced to an oil leak, or worse, your engine is burning it up.

Fixing an oil leak is a challenge. And, if it's beyond your ability to repair, you can always take the vehicle to your favorite car mechanic.

Here are Three Simple Tips for the True Road Warrior:

1. Check the Oil Pan.

If the oil pan has recently been removed for service, there is always the possibility it wasn't reinstalled properly. This being the case, you should be able to see the oil coming out of the crack where the oil pan comes together. Try and tighten it down. If not, then remove the pan replace the gasket that lines the crack.

2. Pull the Plug

The oil pan drain plug is often the source of an oil leak. This is an easy fix! The oil plug is a big screw on the oil pan, and is impossible to miss. The oil plug screw needs to be screwed in straight and tight. Damaged thread on the screw will allow oil to leak through.

The oil pan drain plug also has a soft washer that can turn brittle with age; so be on the lookout. A good rule of thumb is to replace both the drain plug and washer.

3. Check for Oil Line Leakage

If none of the above tips fit the problem, then the next step is to check the oil line for leakage. Even a small hole can leak a lot of oil over time. Depending on the type of oil, and the length of time since your last oil change, hot oil can turn thin and runny.

There are products on the market that can seal oil leaks from the inside. You can add the product when you add oil, and it will coat the inside of the lines and plug up the small holes.

There might be a few leaks in your own life that could use a little plugging. Request our WyoTech DVD , and discover the career training possibilities that can help you become an Automotive Technician.
