How to Stay Dry When Riding Your Chopper in the Rain

motorcycle-man.jpgYou might think that when it's raining, most bike riders choose to put the bike in the garage and ride out the storm. Well, you've hit the nail on the head. You can pick up a lot of information on how to repair motorcycles in a lifetime, but you'll be hard-pressed to find any source that can keep you motivated to ride in the rain.

Most motorcycle riders shy away from riding in the rain. And, when they're caught in a shower, it's usually a case of being ill-equipped.

Riding unprotected in the elements can actually prove harmful to your health. When the outside elements are too cold, the body will react by restricting arteries and capillaries. Your breathing, heart rate, alertness, and judgment will be affected; and often for the worst.

Ideally, you should have three layers of warm clothing protecting your body:

Layer 1

The first layer should never consist of materials such as cotton, or poly-cotton blends. These kinds of materials will trap moisture, especially if you're sweating. A moisture-dampening fabric, such as polypropylene or wool will pull the moisture away from your skin.

Layer 2

The second layer acts as the insulator, and should consist of materials that are thick and fluffy to trap the warm air close to your body. Dacron, synthetic polyester fleece, and wool are the favorites of riders.

Layer 3

The third layer is on the outside, and serves as the wind protector. For most motorcyclists, leather is the material of choice. Not only does it look good, but it also offers great wind and abrasion protection.

Motorcyclists know that merely wearing a waterproof garment in the rain is not enough. Those of you have worn a poncho in the rain storm, are well aware that after a few short minutes, you're just as damp under the poncho as you would be outside of it-even though a poncho is waterproof on both sides.

Why not advance your motorcycle repair skills. With the right type of training, you'll have access to many of the exciting careers in the Motorcycle Technology Field.
