Taking a safe and defensive driving posture when you're on the road should be your top priority. In fact, it should be your only priority. Defensive driving can save lives.
Not paying attention and trusting the other driver to do the right thing are the two main causes of road accidents.
Here are two life-saving safety tips to follow:
1. Stay Alert
Accidents caused from not being attentive, fall into several categories: daydreaming, sleepiness, distractions, chatting, and "highway hypnosis". Research shows that many accidents occur close to home. This is because people are more prone to be relaxed as they approach familiar surroundings.
2. Trust No One
You should never put you life in the hands of another motorist on the road. "Trusting only yourself," is not a bad philosophy to adapt. Never rely on what you think another driver might do. Using yourself as the best example, try and think of the many times you may have used bad judgment on the road.
Learn to anticipate when another motorist is going to make a driving error. Most collisions occur when the "other guy" does something completely unexpected. Like you, they're human, and their minds can be anywhere-except on the road.
If there is any safety precaution more important than the rest; it should be the caution observed when approaching an impending red light. There's a tendency for many people to press the petal-to-the-metal in an attempt to make it through an intersection to beat the red light.
It's all about trust, and trusting your own self to do the right thing in life can sometimes be the biggest challenge. Helping people find automotive career training opportunities that make sense is what the WyoTech Automotive Technology Program is all about.
