7 Simple Ways to Clean Your Grimy Engine

There are countless weekend car mechanics that have irritating memories of lifting up the engine hood, and having drops of engine oil and grease particles fall into their hair or eyes.
Here are A Few Easy Tips that can Help You Fight Engine Grease and Grime:

1. Protect the Battery Cables

First, remove the negative battery cable, and then the positive cable. If the cables remain in the car, make sure they're covered and protected from moisture.

2. Cover Electrical Components

Take care to cover any exposed electrical components with a plastic bag. You'll be hosing the engine down, and it's critical not to get the electrical components wet.

3. The Big Brush Off

A flathead screwdriver works perfect in a crunch. It's also great for getting grease out of those hard-to-reach corners. A small sized wire brush is another handy tool to have for "caked" oil deposits.

4. De-grease the Engine

Have your vehicle owner's manual handy. It should offer advice on the materials needed to clean the engine block. And, be cautious not to use a chemical or material that's highly flammable. A reputable engine de-greaser is the way to go.

5. Hose It Down

Having a compressed air setup might prove to be a bit expensive, in which case a special misting nozzle that's attachable to your garden hose will work just fine. Make sure you avoid high pressure and large volumes of water; and by all means, wear eye protection.

6. Wipe it Down

Once you're done hosing down the engine, make sure you give it enough time to dry thoroughly. Find a handy rag or towel to clean your engine's wiring and hoses, and double check to make sure that plastic, or any rags or towels are all accounted for.

7. Crank it Up

Park the car in a safe spot and let the engine run for a spell. This way, you can be sure the engine will be completely dried before you take it out for a spin again.
