A car that breaks down is going to be something that every driver experiences from time to time. How you handle the emergency, will be the thing that makes or breaks your day. These are the critical moments many people wish they had gotten around to taking an automotive repair training class.
Here are a few tips that can keep you safe until help arrives:
1. Pull Safely Over
At the first sign of car trouble, you should make it over to the breakdown lane or side of the road as smoothly and quickly as possible. Signal your intentions, and keep an eye out for the cars in the back of you.
2. Maintain High Visibility
Once you're on the side of the road, make your car as visible as possible. Use a set of reflectors if it's nighttime. Now, it's time to call for help! Never stand in the front or back of the vehicle, always make sure you're off to the side. It'll also be easier for the help to see you when they arrive.
3. Wait for Help
It's a good idea, if your vehicle is safely out of traffic, to wait inside until help arrives. Make use of your cell phone, if you have one. If you don't have a cell phone, strangers walking up to the car offering to help shouldn't be offended if you open your window slightly; and ask them to call for help.
4. Keep a Safe Distance
If you're changing a flat tire, be sure you're a safe distance from traffic. Remember, safety is a top priority. If changing the tire or repairing your car is impossible under the circumstances, sit inside the car and wait for the next highway patrolman to come along. They patrol the freeways on a regular basis.
5. Stay on the Lookout
If you need to get out your car to walk, no matter where you've broken down, keep your eyes peeled for any potential trouble. If on the highway, walk on the right side of the roadway, and never attempt to cross a multi-lane, high speed roadway.
Having the necessary skills to repair a car the moment something is wrong is a great thing to have. Unfortunately, there never seems to be enough professionals on the road trained to help when a vehicle break-down occurs.
However, if you've been down that road enough times without having any help in sight, maybe it's time to inquire about training for the career possibilities that could help you become a skilled Auto Repair Technician. Why not request our WyoTech DVD today!
