Seeing a brake light appear on the dashboard shouldn't set off an alarm. It will usually be the result of low brake fluid, or the parking brake that's still on. The great news is that you won't need any special tools to fix the problem.
Here are a few simple steps to bring pack your peace of mind.
1. Park the Car
Find a safe place to park. Turn of the engine and pop the hood. Remember, the engine might be hot, so proceed with caution.
2. Pop the Hood
Once under the hood, you'll be looking for the brake fluid reservoir cap. It's a round, black rubber cap approximately three inches in diameter. There will be wording that says, "Use DOT 4", or a number close to it.
3. Remove the Reservoir Cap
When you remove the cap, make sure you're careful not to allow any dirt to fall into the reservoir. Allowing this to happen could cause an even bigger problem.
4. Add Brake Fluid
Before adding any brake fluid, be sure and check the designated DOT number on the reservoir cap again. This number will tell you the type of brake fluid to use. Fill up the reservoir to the "full" mark.
5. Replace the Reservoir Cap
Place the cap back on the reservoir, and fire up the engine. Hopefully, the light should go off. As soon as you can, make an appointment with your auto mechanic.
