Whether male or female, there are some mechanics that will take advantage of a person walking through the front door. It's always best to ask someone close to you about car problems, so that you can get an unbiased opinion.
If they've taken an auto mechanic's course or two, or just naturally inclined to crawl under the hood of a car, they might be able to offer you some valuable advice.
Here are some great tips to avoid the auto-shop pocket-pilfer:
1. Read the Manual
Read the auto manual from the back to front. The more you know; the less chance of being ripped-off. Auto mechanics can tell if you're up on things by the first word out of your mouth. Knowing your vehicle will give you a lot of confidence to ask the right questions, or challenge any answers.
2. Keep old Parts
Ask for old parts back. If you're being charged for something new, there should be something old to show for it. Don't let the mechanic fool you into thinking those old parts are going to be immediately thrown away.
3. Make the Repairs Yourself
Talking to a car mechanic should be a last resort. If you, a trusted friend, or a relative can do the job, it might save you a lot of time and money down the road. Just make sure that anyone working on your vehicle is able to start and finish the job.
4. Ask for Referrals
Be sure and ask around for referrals before you commit to having any work done on your vehicle. Word of mouth can often be the best source of information about an auto technician.
Just remember, there are always going to be a few unhappy customers, but the majority opinion is what you'll be looking for.
One of the best ways to avoid being ripped-off from anything in life; is by having the necessary knowledge the minute you walk through the front door.
